Gamification – The Trend which has Revolutionized Online Education

Introduction

What is Gamification? Although there is no commonly accepted definition, however, to put it in simple words it is the practice of using gaming elements such as a sense of adventure and purpose, competition, or instructiveness of the gaming into a non-gaming context. Games such as video games seem to touch people in a very dedicated entertaining manner. So, if it works with entertainment why not use it in another context such as Education. Speaking of which, education today seems to require such a formula. Although different countries around the world have employed different techniques towards their education system, however, it’s safe to say that all these techniques work on the same lines.

Current education system or Factory?

In the current education system, students get into a class, study a predefined syllabus which puts them on a unidirectional path upon completion of which, they chose more or less the corresponding field or company. This is essentially how a traditional factory operates as well.

You might ask yourself this question, “whether this factory of knowledge works?” The knowledge that is being imparted in schools around the world focuses on bombarding the students with facts and figures of the issues which are not even remotely related to their talents and interests. This obscure relationship is projected in the number of dropouts, job dissatisfaction rates and in most cases, students abandoning their true passions in favour of starting any type of career out of necessity.

Change is Coming

If there is one platform where Gamification has revolutionized education, it is online. More and more people are opting for online learning courses as these provide ease along with the flexibility of time and place. With the current generation being on the constant lookout to add new skills to stay abreast with changing technologies, online certification courses are providing a viable platform for both the student  as well as the teachers. Gamification employs different techniques to transform a boring, mundane subject into a fun and interactive one. It encourages students to learn by the application instead of the traditional way of “learning by heart”.

Gamification is Here to Stay

As the traditional education systems slowly but surely moves in favour of Gamification, we see a lot of start-up Edtech companies offering online certification courses covering a plethora of specializations. And the current situation of this pandemic as worked in favour of this industry can even be called a blessing in disguise for professionals. As schools and colleges are shut down, teachers are employing new tactics to make the whole learning experience livelier. People stuck in homes for months now have had ample time to figure out which online learning course can put them ahead of the curve when everything opens. Now more than ever, students and professionals use e-learning gamification in combination with other learning strategies. This has resulted in a far more engaging student-teacher relationship as compared to the traditional classroom ones.
