In the era of intense business competition, the role of a manager has increased manifold.

Moreover, new businesses and start-ups are emerging at a rapid pace, offering opportunities for more and more employment. The cut-throat competition between corporates has been a major factor behind the significant rise in the recruitment rates for various managerial posts.

Opportunities in the field of general management have also gained huge prominence outside India. In the developed world, corporate giants need general management professionals to secure their market share and attract as many customers as possible. While, in developing countries, start-ups and mid-level firms hire management professionals in a bid to create their space in the market. Most of the GM certifications programs don’t have strict and specific eligibility criteria. For Indian candidates, the courses require a 10+2+3 Diploma or Graduation Degree from a recognized university in any discipline. Some of the courses also consider participants with 10+3 Diploma holders with significant work experience (almost 10 years) in similar fields.

International participants are required to present a Graduation or equivalent degree certificate from a recognized university in their country of origin. Additionally, one has to be proficient in the English language (written as well as spoken) to apply for the course.

What do General Managers do?

Investopedia defines General Managers as the ones who are “responsible for all or part of a department’s operations or the company’s operations, including generating revenue and controlling costs.” In a nutshell, General Managers are operational and financial heads of the company. Talking about the hierarchical structure, GMs rank above most of the employees but below corporate-level executives. However, in small and medium level corporations, the general manager may be a high-level executive, since there is not much space for hierarchy. This is one of the reasons behind variations in roles and responsibilities of general managers in different companies.

In most cases, General Managers report to the higher-level executives. They hold several titles, such as operation manager, department head, finance executive, etc.

Top Responsibilities of General Manager Executives

As one of the senior executives in a company, the General Manager heads and supervises lower-level managers. Talking about the roles and responsibilities of General Managers, they are supposed to provide direction to the business and marketing affairs of the corporation. Following are some of the common responsibilities of General Managers:

  • Supervising the staff
  • Budget management and allocation
  • Designing and executing marketing strategies
  • Overseeing the company’s business affairs
  • Decision making at the highest level
  • Making coordination between various departments
  • Analyzing the challenges and solving them

Since General Management professionals are required across industries, their roles also vary accordingly. For example, the general manager of a hotel would have different roles as compared to that of an ed-tech firm. Likewise, the roles of a General Manager in a real estate company and that in a media house would be contrastive. However, what’s common among the GMs of these companies is that the responsibility of the corporation’s overall growth lies on them.

Roles of Deputy General Managers

In conglomerates, GMs are assisted by several deputy general managers or assistant managers. Global giants such as Accenture, Reliance, Wipro, Infosys, etc. are too big to be handled by one single person. Thus, they hire deputy general managers. A deputy GM is responsible for the functioning of either a single unit of the company or a team within the company. For example, suppose a company headquartered in Mumbai has five departments namely Marketing, Sales, Human Resource, Operation, and Finance. It will be knackering for a single general manager to handle all five departments. Thus, companies appoint assistant general managers to look after the units.

These deputies directly report to the General Manager, under whom the whole departmental affairs come.

Why do companies need General Managers?

General Managers are of great consequence for corporations from across industries. In fact, the whole existence of a company relies on the performance of its general management executives. The better they perform, the more profitable the company will be. They are like threads that bind the whole members of a team to enhance the brand’s productivity. Since every player in the market needs general managers, it is conspicuous to understand that their roles will differ from place to place and from time to time. This makes the role of GMs even more decisive.
